THE NAME JAR

Back to school means lots of talk of new kids, new teachers and feeling new. The Name Jar is a character-building book about being new and celebrating individuality. It’s the perfect fit for this time of the year. Before reading the book aloud my students answered questions about how they would feel moving to a new school. After reading they answered questions about their own names.

This book is about a Korean girl moving to America. On the bus ride to her new school the children have difficulties pronouncing her name and she becomes self conscious. When she arrives to her new class she tells her new classmates that she hadn’t yet picked her name. All her new classmates give her suggestions for a name. In the end, she decides that her real name, Unhei, is unique and precious and it is okay if some kids can't pronounce it.

THE TOOTH FAIRY MEETS EL RATON PEREZ

Have you heard of  El Ratón Pérez, the charming and adventurous mouse who collects children’s teeth in Spain and Latin America?
In this story, “The Tooth Fairy Meets El Ratón Perez” , the author brings together two totally different cultures, and traditions into a beautiful story.  The story revolves around Miguelito’s lost tooth and how the Tooth Fairy, and El Ratón Pérez wants to claim Miguelito’s tooth.  Miguelito lives in the United States therefore he is inside the Tooth Fairy’s territory, but her Hispanic counterpart, El Ratón Pérez, is not ready to relinquish his duty to Latino children!
The author does an excellent job in conveying a message of acceptance and how there is no need to choose between the two. The storyline is in English with some Spanish words sprinkled throughout, AND the illustrations are beautiful! I love this book! It brings back childhood memories with my grandmother.   Try it out! Your kids will love the story.
